There are no NPC's anymore in vanilla, HOWEVER, there is a mod you can get that adds NPCs to the game. Multiplayer is available but it's outdated in an old build. THe latest build should recieve MP by the end of the year I've heard. Superb survivors adds npcs. Not perfect but it'll definitely scratch that itch.

Supurb survivors is currently the most up to date mod. The clothing and other addon mods work with supurb survivors. you can disable superior survivors.
