Looks like a lot of good info here. I want to change the impeller on my 1992 40 4cyl. It has 3 bolts (1 under trim tab) which I loosened. Does the shift linkage just drop out, because I dont see a jam nut-long nut anywhere on the shaft. I can hear it again around 3800 - 3900 rpms. I also have the lower pitch grinding noise coming from the same location only when the motor is in neutral.

The water will prevent the seals from getting overheated.
